Texas voters narrowly backed a ballot measure on Tuesday to eliminate the position of Galveston County Treasurer. Now, the incumbent treasurer is reacting.

Hank Dugie, a Republican who was elected in 2022 to serve as Galveston County Treasurer, issued a statement on Wednesday, praising Texas voters for backing Proposition 12, which eliminates the office. Dugie had made abolishing the office one of his top campaign promises and actively campaigned for Proposition 12 ahead of Tuesday night’s vote.

“I’m proud to be able to deliver on a promise I made to Galveston County voters,” Dugie said (via The Texan’s Brad Johnson). “Despite tens of thousands of opposition dollars funneled into our county from treasurers around the state, local voters showed up and demonstrated once again that they are ready to eliminate an outdated political office in order to save money.”

According to unofficial election results, Proposition 12 passed on Tuesday night with 53 percent of voters in favor. The item also required a majority of voters to approve the measure in Galveston County, where it also passed.

With Proposition 12’s approval, Galveston County is now the 11th county in Texas to abolish the office of County Treasurer.
