One of the members of Attorney General Ken Paxton’s legal team has punched his ticket to the runoff for a seat on the Houston City Council.

Tony Buzbee, a prominent trial lawyer who represented Paxton during his impeachment trial earlier this year, advanced to a runoff for Houston City Council District G on Tuesday night. Buzbee was challenging incumbent Councilwoman Mary Nan Huffman. Huffman received 49 percent of the vote to 41 percent for Buzbee. A third candidate, Enyinna O. Isiguzo, received 9 percent.

Buzbee is making his second bid for office this year after previously running for mayor of Houston in 2019. Buzbee was endorsed in this election by Paxton and former Gov. Rick Perry. Meanwhile, Huffman was endorsed by the Republican Party of Texas.

The runoff election is scheduled for Saturday, December 9.
