Turner and Buzbee Going to Runoff in Houston Mayor's Race

Incumbent Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner got the most votes in his bid for re-election on Tuesday night, but did not receive enough support to avoid a runoff.

With all precincts reporting, Turner received over 114,000 votes, or about 47 percent of the vote, falling just short of the 50 percent needed to avoid a runoff. Lawyer Tony Buzbee will be joining Turner in the runoff, after placing second with about 69,000 votes, or 28 percent. Bill King came in third, with Councilman Dwight Boykins and Victoria Romero rounding out the top five finishers.

Turner and Buzbee were long viewed as the front runners in the contest, with polls ahead of election day showing Turner leading the pack with Buzbee in second place.

The two men will meet in a runoff on December 14th.
