Amarillo to Tie Record for Most Crowded Ballot in City History

Correction: There were 23, not 25, candidates for city office in 1967. This article originally ran under the headline that this year’s election was tied for second, not first. The original story is included below:

The May 6th 2023 City of Amarillo ballot will be tied with 2011 for the second most crowded in Amarillo history, with a total of 23 candidates running.

While the overall ballot hasn’t defeated the 1967 record of 25 candidates, one race which is setting a new record is Place 1, which has seven candidates. The previous record of 6 candidates for Place 1 was set in 1949.

This year will also set a new record for the second most mayoral candidates, with 6 individuals running. (The record of 11 candidates set in 2011.)

Other races on the ballot are all contested, though they are far less crowded. Three people have filed for both Place 2 and Place 3, while four candidates have thrown their hats in for Place 4.
