Amarillo Turnout Drop Small Compared to Historic Runoffs

Early voting in the runoff election for Amarillo City Council Place 1 and Place 4 saw only a slight drop in turnout, at least when compared to the drop seen in previous runoff elections.

On Monday, Potter County recorded 405 in-person ballots cast, compared to 468 who voted on the first day of early voting for the first round. The drop in turnout was more pronounced in Randall County, where 796 people cast ballots on Monday compared to 1,153 who cast ballots on the first day of voting in the first round.

When looking at just in-person early votes, there has only been a decrease in turnout of about 26%. Historically, Amarillo has seen an average drop in turnout for city runoffs of 40%.

Mail-in ballots are coming in strong, with nearly as many ballots having already been received by Potter and Randall by the end of the first day of early voting alone as they did throughout early voting in the first round.

Early voting continues through Friday, June 16th, with another opportunity to cast an early vote ballot on Tuesday, June 20th. Election Day is Saturday, June 24th. Be sure to check out AmarilloVotes.online to view our runoff voter guide.
