Four Price (R-Amarillo) announced Wednesday he will not seek reelection to the Texas House of Representatives. "I’ve given this decision considerable thought and believe the time is right to complete my service as a House member,” said Price in a statement.

Price was first elected to represent House District 87 in 2010. The district includes Potter, Carson, Moore, Hutchinson, Sherman, Hansford, Ochiltree, and Lipscomb counties.

According to Texas Scorecard, Price has received poor ratings from groups across the political spectrum. On the right, Texans for Fiscal Responsibility rated gave him a rating of 39, Young Conservatives of Texas rated him 66, and American Conservative Union gave him a rating of 74. On the other side, Equality Texas gave him an F rating while Environment Texas gave him a rating of 60. One outlier among these ratings was Texas Right to Life, which gave him a perfect rating of 100.

The district is deep red. In his most recent reelection bid, Price’s only opponent in the general election was Libertarian Party nominee Nick Hearn. Price won the election with 87%. During the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump won the counties in the district with 76% of the vote. Price has not had a challenger from the Democratic Party since 2014. In that election, Democrat Abel Bosquez managed to earn 15.7% of the vote.

In a separate article, we have taken a look at potential candidates in the open race. The primary election is set to be held on March 5th, 2024, with the general election scheduled for November 5th, 2024.
