Potter County Democratic Party chairman David Martinez has launched his campaign for Potter County Commissioner in Precinct 1.

Martinez, an Amarillo educator, launched his social media account for his campaign earlier this month. In a bio posted to his page, Martinez says, “His sincere desire to serve his city and county especially the underrepresented people and the less fortunate can be summarized by his motto, ‘because it's just the right thing to do.’”

Martinez is planning to run for the County Commissioner seat currently held by incumbent Republican H.R. Kelly. Kelly has not stated whether he will be seeking re-election in 2024 after most recently being re-elected in 2020 with 82 percent of the vote. Aside from Martinez, no other candidates have declared their plans to run.

Candidates can begin filing for the ballot beginning in November 2023. The primary election is scheduled for March 2024, with the winners advancing to next November’s general election.
