AEDC to Consider 'Engaging Outside Special Counsel' in Response to City Council Guidance

The Amarillo Economic Development Corporation’s Board of Directors will meet on Monday, October 7th to “discuss, consider and take appropriate action on engaging outside special counsel for opinion on recent guidance to City Council on budgetary matters.”

The meeting follows Amarillo City Council approving a constrained version of the AEDC’s budget late last month, authorizing only “salaries, contractual obligations, and operating expenses.” The council also directed their outside counsel George Hyde to draft a revised version of the AEDC’s articles of incorporation.

Those moves by the council were in response to the ongoing investigation regarding the AEDC/RANGE controversy, where the AEDC paid the RANGE Foundation $750,000 in membership fees despite the item only being budgeted for $100,000.

The upcoming AEDC meeting will also include a workshop for the AEDC board and senior staff “to discuss and develop policies related to economic development.”

While the meeting will be open to the public and will feature a public comment portion, the agenda notes that “The Board of Directors reserves the right to go into Executive Session at any time during the meeting on any agenda item for which the Texas Government Code (TMC) may provide for a closed session.”

The meeting will begin at 11:00 am on October 7th and will be held in the Ed Davis Conference Room on the 9th floor of the First Bank Southwest Tower. The agenda for the meeting can be downloaded at this link.
