Republican Party of Texas Chairman Matt Rinaldi announced last week that he is not seeking re-election. With Rinaldi now out of the race, several candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to be the next leader of the state party.
Prior to Rinaldi announcing his plans not to seek another term, Dana Myers, the vice chair of the state party, announced that she would seek the office. Myers was elected in 2022 to serve as the party’s vice chair and is a voting member of the State Republican Executive Committee. Myers is a medical business consultant from the Houston area.
Weston Martinez, a former Texas Real Estate Commissioner, also announced his candidacy for state party chairman. Martinez previously sought the offices of Railroad Commissioner and Land Commissioner in past Republican primaries. Martinez is a graduate of Wayland Baptist University, according to his LinkedIn profile.
In addition to Myers and Martinez, former Collin County Republican Chairman Abraham George has also announced his plans to seek the chairmanship. George, who has the backing of several notable conservative figures, previously ran for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives in 2024, losing his primary election.
Several other individuals have also been rumored as potential contenders for state party chairman. The state party chair is responsible for leading meetings of the State Republican Executive Committee and is one of the state party’s key fundraisers.
Republican delegates will elect the new state party chair during the party’s convention in San Antonio, May 23-25.
