President Joe Biden has swept the Democratic presidential primaries this year, winning nearly every county in every state’s primary election. However, one area county rejected Biden in this year’s primary contest, becoming one of the only counties in the nation to vote against the incumbent president in the Democratic primary.
In Cimarron County, located in the Oklahoma Panhandle — Democrats picked someone other than Biden as the party’s presidential candidate. 24 Democrats voted in the primary election in the county, with 11 casting ballots for Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips. Biden trailed with six votes, while Armando Perez-Serrato, Stephen Lyons, and Marianne Williamson also received at least one vote.
Phillips’ victory in Cimarron County prevented Biden from sweeping the state in Oklahoma’s March 5 presidential primary election. On the Republican side, meanwhile, former President Donald Trump won a landslide victory in the county, with 307 of 336 votes cast.
While Cimarron’s push against Biden was an outlier, it isn’t the only county in the region that also voted against the incumbent in this year’s presidential primaries. In Loving County, a small county located west of Midland, challenger Frankie Lozada won the Democratic primary for president. Lozada is the only candidate who received a vote.
