Former mayoral hopeful Jeff “GunEagle” McGunegle is making another foray into the electoral scene.

This week, McGunegle confirmed that he intends to run as a write-in candidate for State Representative in House District 87. HD 87, which includes Potter County and several counties in the northeast Panhandle, is currently represented by Rep. Four Price, who is not seeking re-election.

“My main goal is to inspire 100,000 citizens to vote in November,” McGunegle said via text. “Leveling the playing field.”

A life consciousness coach, McGunegle ran for mayor of Amarillo in 2023, winning 116 votes. McGunegle said this year, he is not affiliating with a major party. He is also supporting independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign, which is also currently seeking ballot access in Texas.

McGunegle’s entry into the race adds a third contender to the race to replace Price, as Republican nominee Caroline Fairly and Democratic nominee Timothy Gassaway have already advanced to the general election. Fairly is a medical negotiator who defeated three opponents in the March primary election, while Gassaway, a local real estate professional, was unopposed in his primary.

The two other parties with ballot access in Texas — the Libertarian and Green parties — did not field candidates for this race.
