Voters in Canyon may soon be deciding whether to pass a tax increase at the ballot box.
Last week, the Canyon City Commission held a discussion on a potential bond election. The proposed bond election — which does not yet have a formally announced price tag — is expected to be focused on public safety upgrades in the City of Canyon.
The discussion among commissioners focused mostly on the topic of when to call the election, if they decide to move forward with placing the item on the ballot. Commissioners debated both November 2024 and May 2025 as two target election dates.
There appeared to be a split among Commissioners on when to call the election.
“I’ve been a November guy since the beginning,” Commissioner Cody Jones said.
Meanwhile, Mayor Gary Hinders expressed his feelings that May 2025 might be a better time to hold the election.
“I lean towards May, too, just to give us plenty of time to get it done right,” Hinders said.
Among the reasons thrown out to support calling the election in November was the increased voter turnout for the November election, which would lead to more residents participating in the process. Meanwhile, those who supported the May election date spoke about ensuring that City of Canyon staff have enough time to ensure the election is ready to move forward.
Commissioners still have time to decide, but the deadline to call the November election is rapidly approaching. According to the Secretary of State, August 19th is the last day for an election authority to call a general or special election for the November ballot.
