Amarillo Mayor Cole Stanley took a chair shot during a wrestling event over the weekend.

According to reporting from KVII-TV, Stanley participated in a wrestling event on Saturday that was hosted by the Nacho Daddy Promotion. During the event, while Stanley was introducing the champion, he was blindsided by a chair shot delivered by another competitor. Stanley got up from the chair shot and challenged the other wrestler to a match in the ring.

The wrestling event was being put on as part of the Route 66 Festival in Amarilo.

Stanley’s participation in the wrestling event calls back to Amarillo’s longtime history with professional wrestling. Amarillo was a hotbed for professional wrestlers in the mid-20th century, with a number of notable competitors having come from the Amarillo area.

However, according to our research, Stanley may be the first mayor to have participated in a professional wrestling event during the city’s history.
