Canyon ISD is again asking voters to support a tax increase.

Citing budget deficits, the school board is asking for a tax rate that would increase the average yearly tax bill for district residents by $56.54.

According to an informational page provided by Canyon ISD, the increase will fund:

  • Teacher and staff pay raises to retain a competitive and quality workforce’

  • Continue academic excellence by maintaining all student programs

  • Buses for additional bus routes to accommodate for growth in enrollment

  • Offset all inflationary costs, especially P&C Insurance and Utilities

  • Continue maintenance and upkeep of facilities

  • Offset loss of Federal ESSER funding

Canyon ISD had a similar effort fail last year, when 57% voted against.

The ballot language will be as follows:

RATIFYING THE AD VALOREM TAX RATE OF $.9577 IN CANYON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR THE CURRENT YEAR, A RATE THAT WILL RESULT IN AN INCREASE OF 4.7911% IN MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS TAX REVENUE FOR THE DISTRICT FOR THE CURRENT YEAR AS COMPARED TO THE PRECEDING YEAR, WHICH IS AN ADDITIONAL $4,532,022

Canyon ISD is one of the two major school districts in the Amarillo area, with its boundaries extending from the City of Canyon well into southern Amarillo. The other major school district, Amarillo ISD, is not holding a tax ratification election, though they have recently held focus group meetings about a potential bond election, which could come as early as next May.

More information about the election can be found on the Canyon ISD website at CanyonISD.net/tre.
