Tax Increase on Ballot for Canyon ISD Voters

When voters in Canyon ISD head to the polls in November, a tax increase will be on the ballot.

The proposed rate is $0.96 per $100 of valuation. According to meeting minutes from Canyon ISD, the new rate will be “effectively a 0.24% increase in the tax rate.” This is mostly due to increased property valuations, as the new rate is actually lower than the current rate of $1.14. About 73% of the tax rate will go towards maintenance & operations, with the rest going to pay for the district’s debt service.

One of the main controversies surrounding the election has been less about the rate itself but the fact that the school board chose to hold a tax rate election but not a special election to fill the school board vacancy left by Paul Blake, who passed away earlier this year. The board will instead appoint a replacement, who will serve until 2025.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 7th. Also on the ballot will be 14 state constitutional amendments.
