The Amarillo Fire Department is offering tips to Amarillo residents on how to prevent fires during the fall season.
Residents are advised to keep a three foot safety zone in front of any heating equipment. This includes floor furnaces, wall furnaces, fireplaces and electric heaters. Pets and children should also be kept away from the fireplace.
Those cooking for the holidays are advised not to leave ovens and other cooking centers unattended. Thanksgiving Day is the leading day for house fires in the United States, according to the Amarillo Fire Department. Carbon monoxide and fire alarms should also be operating.
Property owners are also being reminded to secure any vacant properties. Due to cold temperatures, people have been reportedly breaking into vacant buildings and starting warming fires. AFD says that in many cases, these fires can burn properties and cause fatalities.
