On Sunday, a suspect opened fire inside of a church in Sutherland Springs, killing twenty-six people who were in attendance. Officers have identified the gunman as Devin P. Kelly, 26.
Following the shooting, several Texas officials expressed their concerns for those involved.
"While the details of this horrific act are still under investigation, Cecilia and I want to send our sincerest thoughts and prayers to all those who have been affected by this evil act," Governor Greg Abbott said. "I want to thank law enforcement for their response and ask that all Texans pray for the Sutherland Springs community during this time of mourning and loss."
Senator Ted Cruz also responded, saying that the response to the shooting showed Texas communities coming together.
"In the face of unspeakable evil we're seeing Texas coming together. We are seeing Texans helping Texans, leaning on each other," Cruz said. "The men and women of this community are not alone. You are being lifted up by the prayers of literally millions of Texans, millions of Americans and millions of people across the planet."
