Members of the Amarillo City Council will consider approving a zoning change on Tuesday night that will allow the construction of the new downtown baseball stadium.
According to documents from City officials, current zoning downtown does not allow for the construction of the stadium. Officials are planning to change the zoning, with the support of the City of Amarillo Planning Department, to allow for the construction. Under the change, the City Council would amend the current zoning to change from light industrial to planned development. Specifically, the area will be designated as "urban."
City staff says that by approving the zoning change, the City Council can help nurture an entertainment district in downtown Amarillo that features the Globe News Center for the Performing Arts, the Amarillo Civic Center, the baseball stadium and the downtown library.
The City Council will consider the change during its regular meeting on Tuesday, January 2nd in the Council Chambers of Amarillo City Hall (509 Southeast 7th Avenue). The meeting begins at 5pm.
