Tom Mechler has resigned from his role as chairman of the Texas Republican Party, according to the Texas Tribune.
Mechler, an Amarillo resident, resigned from his post due to personal reasons, according to the Republican Party of Texas. Mechler has been the chief official in the state's party since 2015, following chairman Steve Munisteri's departure to work for the presidential campaign of Senator Rand Paul. Mechler was instrumental in working to unite Republican voters in the state behind Donald Trump following an aggressive primary season. Mechler has also been praised for helping to stabilize the party's finances.
Mechler defeated Dallas County chairman Wade Emmert to win the position in 2015. Mechler was also re-elected to his position in 2016.
The Texas Republican Party is planning a meeting in Austin on June 3rd to elect an interim chairman to finish Mechler's term, according to a press release.
