APD to Have Extra Officers on DWI Enforcement over July 4th

"The Amarillo Police Department will put extra officers out from Friday June 30th through Tuesday July 4th to focus on impaired drivers because of the celebrations that are associated with the Independence Day Holiday. The July 4th holiday is recognized as one of the most deadly holidays on our roadways.  On average there is an alcohol-related crash in Texas every 20 minutes. A DWI crash often results in serious injuries or death.  If the fear of killing yourself or someone else isn’t a good enough reason to not drink and drive, you should consider that DWI has longstanding negative consequences. DWI penalties include jail time, a suspended driver’s license, and as much as $20,000 or more in fines, legal fees, and other expenses.

The Amarillo Police Department has received a Comprehensive Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant courtesy of the Texas Department of Transportation to compensate extra patrol officers to concentrate their enforcement efforts on impaired drivers, speeding violators, and seatbelt/child restraint violators.

Please plan ahead and make arrangements for a sober driver if you intend to travel after consuming alcohol."
