Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp has been selected by Governor Greg Abbott to lead the recovery efforts in south Texas, following Hurricane Harvey.
Governor Abbott announced this week that Sharp would chair the Governor's Commission to Rebuild Texas. In a statement, the Governor's office wrote that the commission "will oversee the response and relief effort between the state and local governments to ensure victims of the storm get everything they need as quickly as possible."
Sharp has served as chancellor of the Texas A&M University system since 2011. Before serving in his role at Texas A&M, Sharp was a long-time Democratic officeholder, serving in the Texas Legislature and on the Texas Railroad Commission.
In his role, Sharp will coordinate efforts between governmental entities.
Sharp and Abbott are currently touring the state discussing the rebuilding efforts with the heads of several government departments.
