Amarillo’s Community Development department is teaming up with Texas Tech University to launch the “Coming Home” program.
According to information from the City of Amarillo, the new program will be a partnership between the City and Texas Tech psychiatrists to help find homes for homeless individuals in Amarillo. Twenty-five individuals will be assisted by case workers and will be housed through the program, officials say.
“The cost of running the program is less than leaving people on the street, people who frequently end up in crisis services such as the emergency room, shelters, and jail - which are more costly then providing housing and support services,” said Juliana Kitten, Amarillo community development director.
The program is funded through the Public Housing Agency Housing Choice Voucher program and is benefiting from sponsorships offered by local businesses and community organizations, such as the Rotary Club of Amarillo, Amarillo Housing First and Xcel Energy.
