Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has endorsed Senator John Cornyn for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2020.
This week, the Austin-American Statesman reported Patrick’s support of Cornyn, amid rumors that Patrick was considering challenging Cornyn, himself. While Patrick’s spokesperson said the report was “fake news” that Patrick was planning a Senate bid, the newly re-elected Lieutenant Governor ended the speculation, saying he is supporting Cornyn.
“Senator John Cornyn and I have been working together for Texas for many years,” Patrick said in a statement. “I told him months ago that I would be proud to endorse his re-election in 2020 and today, I am making that endorsement official. John is a principled leader who has been a great U.S. senator for Texas.”
Cornyn has drawn one challenger already, coming in the form of independent Dwayne Stovall. No Democrats or third party candidates have officially announced challenges to Cornyn, a Republican.
