Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) joined a majority of U.S. House members on Wednesday in approving a sex trafficking bill.
The Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act passed on Wednesday with a 388-25 vote. The bill "expresses the sense of Congress that section 230 of the Communications Act of 1934 was not intended to provide legal protection to websites that unlawfully promote and facilitate prostitution and contribute to sex trafficking," and also sets new penalties for certain sex trafficking offenses.
Thornberry joined a majority in passing the bill. In total, 214 Republicans backed the bill's passage, along with 174 Democrats. 14 Republicans and 11 Democrats voted against the bill.
The bill will now move to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
