Another local homeless advocacy group is setting up a new campsite for members of the homeless population in Amarillo.
Yellow City Community Outreach announced today that they are setting up a new campsite for those affected by the expected closure of the Christ Church Camp. The new location is set up southeast of Amarillo and is meant to serve as a temporary solution for those displaced until the group can complete their tiny house project.
"We know there has to be some type of temporary service until we get the tiny houses done," YCCO board member Steven Liles said. "Now that the [Christ Church Camp of New Beginnings] is not a valid option, we say that need has to be met."
Liles said that the campsite already has people taking up temporary residency and a security fence and port-a-potties have been erected.
When asked if there will be any issue with the City of Amarillo, Liles said that he does not expect the new campsite to encounter any troubles.
"We visited with the City already and its outside of the City limits," Liles said. "We are doing this with the expectation of being proud to serve people."
