Thornberry Backs Bill on School Safety

Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) voted with a bipartisan majority on Wednesday to support a bill aimed at improving school safety.

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted 407-10 to approve the Student, Teachers, and Officers Preventing (STOP) School Violence Act of 2018. The bill amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to create an anonymous reporting system for school threats, as well as creating training law enforcement officers, school personnel and students to prevent violence on campus. The bill also changes some definitions and names of various training programs or agency officials.

In the bill's 407-10 passage through the U.S. House of Representatives, five Republicans and five Democrats voted against HR 4909's passage. The bill is authored by Congressman John H. Rutherford (R-Florida).

The bill will now head to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
