Congressman Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) voted on Thursday for a bill that is aimed to crack down on opioids entering the United States mail.
According to information from the U.S. House of Representatives, Thornberry voted for the Securing the International Mail Against Opioids Act of 2018. The bill, HR 5788, if passed, will create new fee schedules for certain international mailings. The money made from the increases in fees will be divided between U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the United States Postal Service. Additionally, the bill would create a $100 million program to assist the federal government in tracking opioids that enter the U.S. mail system.
The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives on a 353-52 margin on Thursday. Three Republicans and forty-nine Democrats voted against the bill.
