Officials from the Amarillo Fire Department say a fire caused by a heat lamp that occurred on Wednesday killed several chickens.
AFD officials report that crews were dispatched to the 5300 block of Tawney on Wednesday around 8:30pm on the report of a fire. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the back yard of 5300 Tawney. Firefighters found a storage building, a chicken coop, some backyard play equipment, a wooden fence, and a utility pole on fire. Crews also found that a nearby wooden fence across the alley had caught fire from the radiant heat, and an electrical service line was damaged.
Authorities called the fire under control about 30 minutes after arriving. Officials believe a heat lamp inside of the chicken coop started the fire and claimed the lives of several chickens.
Nobody was injured in the fire. The residents of the home were not at the scene when the fire started.
Damages are estimated at $25,000.
