TxDOT Encourages Amarillo Drivers to Keep Eyes on Road

April is National Distracted Driving Month and residents are being encouraged to keep eyes on the road during this month of awareness.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, drivers are being encouraged to avoid distracted driving during the Heads Up, Texas campaign. The campaign will seek to encourage drivers to keep eyes on the road, as TxDOT says that one of every five wrecks in Texas occurs due to distracted driving.

TxDOT officials say that drivers need to understand that while the incentive to multitask exists, drivers should be cautious to ensure safe driving conditions.

“It’s extremely concerning that drivers still choose to give their attention to things other than the road when they’re behind the wheel,” James Bass, TxDOT executive director, said in a statement. “As a society, we’re more connected than ever to our devices and easily tempted to multitask, but drivers need to understand all of these various distractions can lead to a tragic outcome.”

The campaign will include the It Can Wait distracted driving virtual reality experience at Amarillo High School on Monday, April 23rd.
