Amarillo City Council Votes to Change Water Billing, Trash Collection

Amarillo City Councilmembers voted on Tuesday to make changes to two major local governmental services.

First, on Tuesday night, the City Council voted 4-1 to approve a change to the water billing process in Amarillo. The new policy will change the drainage billing process, making the drainage fee the responsibility of the owner of a property, according to City documents. Currently, the bill can be directed to either the tenant or property owner as part of the property's water bill. Councilmember Elaine Hays was the sole vote against the policy.

Next, the City Council voted to change the trash collection service in Amarillo. The new trash collection change will replace dumpsters in some neighborhoods with plastic trash carts. The City Council voted unanimously to approve the trash policy changes and the purchase of the trash carts at a cost over $250,000.

Also, during the meeting, Councilmembers gave the greenlight on certain projects approved by voters during the 2016 municipal bond election. The majority of the approved projects from Tuesday night were included in Proposition 1 for Streets during the 2016 election.
