The Republican nominee for a judicial spot in Lubbock County was killed in a vehicle-on-bicycle wreck on Wednesday morning.
According to KCBD in Lubbock, David Nelson, the Republican nominee for Lubbock County Court at Law #3, was identified as the bicyclist involved in an accident that occurred on Farm-to-Market Road 41 and County Road 1240 at around 8am on Wednesday. Nelson was reportedly on his bicycle when he was stuck by a Ford pickup, driven by a 37-year-old. Nelson was taken to a Lubbock hospital, where he later died, the television station reported.
Nelson was the Republican nominee for the judicial seat, after winning his primary on March 6th. Nelson unseated Judge Phillip Hays, who was appointed to serve out the remainder of Judge Judy Parker's term, after Governor Greg Abbott appointed Parker to another court. Before running for judge, Nelson was a member of the Lubbock City Council.
Following the announcement of Nelson's passing, the Lubbock County Republican Party issued a statement, sharing its condolences with the Nelson family.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the Nelson family," Lubbock Republicans said on Facebook. "David has gone home. Join me in prayer for the family as they navigate this shocking loss. David was on his way to serving this community as a judge and he will be surely missed."
