Fire Crews Respond to Fires at Canyon Inn Property

Canyon Fire Department crews battled a fire at the former Canyon Inn property on Monday night.

According to the Randall County Sheriff's Office, crews were dispatched after smoke was seen coming from a room on the second floor of the old Canyon Inn in Canyon. The property is owned by a church and has been set for demolition. However, crews from the Randall County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Department of Energy have been using the property to conduct a joint training exercise. During the exercise, distraction and breaching devices were used. These devices contain explosive components, although officials say that they are unsure of the exact cause of the fire. Training had ended around three hours prior to the start of the fire.

The fire was first spotted in a room on the second floor and spread to other rooms. The Fire Department arrived on scene and called for aid from the Randall County Fire Department. Roads were also closed to battle the blaze.

No injuries were reported and no cause for the fire has been announced.
