Senator Ted Cruz has penned a letter to the director of Homeland Security, calling for the agency to begin accepting private donations to aid those under the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
In a letter released on Tuesday, Cruz told Acting U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan that his agency should begin accepting donations from charitable organizations to aid those under CBP’s custody. Cruz said the move would allow Homeland Security to “use the generosity of the American people to help manage the humanitarian crisis on our border”
“I thus urge you to establish and publicize a process for accepting donations from charitable organizations, faith-based organizations, and NGOs to aid individuals in CBP custody,” Cruz said. “Even with the additional supplemental emergency funding, I am confident that DHS and CBP can still use the generosity of the American people to help manage the humanitarian crisis on our border.”
