One of the Texas Republicans who sought the Speaker’s gavel this year is planning to step down from his office.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Richmond Republican Rep. John Zerwas will step down from his seat on September 30th. Zerwas, who unsuccessfully ran for House Speaker before dropping out in late 2019, was first elected to his seat in 2006, presently serves as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.
It is unclear how the field to replace Zerwas might take shape. Democrat Eliz Markowitz is thus far the only candidate to launch a bid to run for the position in 2020, the Texas Tribune reports.
