Letter to the Editor: Vote Against Propositions A-C

The following Letter to the Editor was submitted for publication by reader Allen Mires.

I couldn't agree more that Amarillo needs to vote against Propositions A, B and C, for that matter. Joe Biden said earlier this year that if you vote for him "your taxes will go up." Every economist agrees raising taxes during a recession or while people are struggling with re-opening after the COVID shutdown, will only compound financial problems. One economist actually said it was "idiotic" to do such a thing. Well, the leaders of Amarillo, according to that economist, are idiots.

They want a new civic center, they want a new city hall, they want a new park, they want a new parking garage. Really? We're not supposed to be congregating. We aren't supposed to be attending large gatherings so why should we WASTE our money on building a new civic center? Oh, because the city can host a musical concert at the baseball park that the citizens voted against and serve alcohol there but the bars "shouldn't be open" right now?

I don't care if the bars are open or not and I don't care about some concert. But how stupid do you have to be to not see the hypocrisy in all of this? With the exception of the foreigners who have moved here from California, Washington, New York, and New Jersey, WE ARE TEXANS! We are smarter than this! Tell City Hall, "NO!" You will not increase your property values and let your businesses get richer off the citizens of Amarillo any more. And when we get someone in office who is worth it, we will talk about extending terms to 4 years. As of now, even the 2 year term is too much.
