Republican President Donald Trump is holding a firm lead over the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in Texas with several months to go before the start of early voting.
In a new University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll, Trump leads Biden by five points, 49 percent to 44 percent in the Lone Star State. Candidates for the two third parties allowed to place candidates on the ballot in Texas, the Libertarian Party and the Green Party, were not included in the poll. Both the Libertarians and Greens are currently holding their own nominating processes to choose presidential candidates.
Additionally, 50 percent of Texas voters say they will either “definitely” or “probably” vote to re-elect Trump in November, according to the poll.
Republicans also hold a lead in a generic congressional match up in the poll, 46 percent of respondents saying they would vote for the Republican candidate for U.S. Congress versus 44 percent of respondents who said they would vote for the Democratic candidate.
The poll also showed Trump with a 49 percent positive job approval rating in Texas.
