Greg Sagan has announced his plans to relaunch his campaign for U.S. Congress in Texas’ District 13.
Sagan, an Amarillo Democrat, announced his decision in an email to the Pioneer this week. Sagan was set to join the July 14 runoff against Gus Trujillo in the Democratic primary, but announced his decision to withdraw from the race recently due to health concerns. However, Sagan now says after consulting his medical providers and considering the unique circumstances surrounding the 2020 election season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has decided to relaunch his campaign. Sagan's name was still set to appear on the runoff ballot, regardless of whether he relaunched his campaign.
Sagan was previously the party's 2018 nominee for U.S. House District 13 against Republican incumbent Rep. Mac Thornberry.
Greg Sagan's decision now sets up a contested runoff for both major parties in the U.S. House District 13 race this year. Ronny Jackson and Josh Winegarner are squaring off in the Republican primary runoff.
The winners of both runoffs will face Libertarian Jack B. Westbrook in November. The winner of the November election will be the first new congressional representative for the district since Thornberry first took office in 1995.
