Democrat Greg Sagan is planning to drop his bid to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Clarendon) according to an email to supporters on Thursday.

In the email, Sagan announced his plans to exit the race after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January. According to Sagan’s email, due to healthcare issues related to his diagnosis and prevention of infections, he has decided to withdraw from the race.

“I have come to realize that these new limitations make it impossible for me to promise the people of this district representation in Washington knowing I have such a disease,” Sagan said. “Therefore, I am withdrawing from the Congressional race for the U.S. House of Representatives, Texas District 13…”

Sagan’s exit from the race ends what was expected to be a lively Democratic runoff campaign for the seat, as office manager Gus Trujillo is now the only candidate vying for the nomination. Timothy Gassaway, the third candidate in the race, was eliminated from contention in the March 3 primary.

This was Sagan’s second time seeking the seat, being the Democratic nominee against Thornberry and Libertarian Calvin DeWeese in 2018. In that race, Thornberry defeated Sagan and DeWeese with 82 percent of the vote against Sagan’s 17 percent.

Trujillo is expected to face the winner of the Republican runoff between Josh Winegarner and Ronny Jackson for the seat. Libertarian Jack B. Westbrook is also expected to appear on the ballot in November.
