Jailed Dallas Salon Owner Released by Texas Supreme Court

Dallas salon owner Shelley Luther has been released from the Dallas County Jail after originally being sentenced to seven days in the jail for violating orders to keep salons closed in Texas due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luther was released on Thursday after the Texas Supreme Court granted a motion for her release. The move by the Supreme Court came on the same day Gov. Greg Abbott announced he would modify his executive orders to eliminate the penalty of jail time for Texas accused of violating his orders.

The incident at Luther’s salon, Salon A La Mode, attracted national attention after she was pressured by government officials in the Dallas area to close. Luther received a cease-and-desist letter from Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins and eventually receive a temporary restraining order from Judge Eric Moye, who sentenced Luther to seven days after she refused in court to apologize for keeping her salon open.

Lawmakers across Texas had called for Luther’s release this week and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said he would cover the fine imposed on Luther for keeping her salon open.

Salons in Texas are currently scheduled to reopen under Gov. Greg Abbott’s orders on Friday, May 8.
