Two candidates have thrown their hats into the ring in hopes of claiming one of three seats on the Amarillo College Board of Regents this year.
On Wednesday, former Amarillo College Regent Don L. Nicholson announced on social media his plans to seek a seat on the board once again. Nicholson, a local public health specialist, previously served as chairman of the board before losing his seat in a 2015 election. However, Nicholson said on social media that he is not running against anyone, but rather is running to serve the AC community.
“I’m not running against anyone,” Nicholson wrote. “I only want to again represent the Panhandle on the best area Community College. My previous terms give me insights and connections help AC acquire and maintain its status as an institution of excellence. My years on the board were personally satisfying and I feel advantageous to the Area. I fell being able to represent AC on the Texas Association Community Colleges as a director for large communities assisted in the difference AC makes for our area.”
In addition to Nicholson, AC officials confirmed via email on Thursday that both incumbent Anette Carlisle and newcomer Adrian Meander have filed to seek seats on the board. According to past reporting, Meander is an assistant vice president at Amarillo National Bank.
Incumbent Patrick Miller has announced his plans to depart the board in May at the end of his term, leaving at least one open seat up for grabs. In addition to Carlisle and Miller, incumbent Dan Henke is also up for re-election, but has not made any public statements about whether he will seek another term in office.
The deadline for candidates to file for spots on the ballot is Friday, February 12. Election Day is May 1.
