Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush has launched his campaign to oust incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton next year.

On Wednesday, Bush launched his campaign for Attorney General at a kickoff rally in Austin. Surrounded by supporters, Bush announced his plans to challenge Paxton, the sitting Republican Attorney General who has come under criticism for various ongoing legal issues.

With his announcement, Bush has become the first sitting Texas statewide official to challenge another sitting statewide official since 2014. In that election cycle, then-Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples was one of three Republicans who challenged then-Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the Republican primary for his seat. Staples won 18 percent of the vote, failing to make the runoff between Dewhurst and Dan Patrick.

Bush’s announcement also leaves his current Land Commissioner job open for the 2022 election cycle. One Republican, Weston Martinez, has already launched his bid for Bush’s seat, while more candidates are expected to seek the job over the coming months.

The primary election will be held early next year.
