The first candidate in the race for Texas Land Commissioner has officially launched his 2022 campaign.

Former Texas Real Estate Commissioner Weston Martinez announced his campaign for Land Commissioner this week, becoming the first candidate seeking to replace the outgoing incumbent George P. Bush, who has decided to run for Attorney General. In a press release, Martinez said he is a “conservative leader, grassroots activist, businessman [and] Alamo defender.”

Martinez’s first stop on the campaign trail took place on Thursday, when he appeared at the Alamo historical site to remember the Texans who died at the battle.

While Martinez is the first candidate in the race, candidates still have several months to finalize their campaigns for the office. Candidates can file through December to seek the office and the first primaries are expected sometime in early to mid-2022.
