U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) has thrown his weight behind former State Sen. Don Huffines’ bid to become the next Governor of Texas.
On Thursday, the Huffines campaign released an endorsement video featuring Paul praising Huffines and giving him his endorsement in next year’s race for Governor.
“It is my pleasure to endorse my friend Don Huffines for governor of Texas,” Paul said. “I have known Don for over 20 years. He is a loyal, steadfast fighter for limited, constitutional government. He has been in the thick of every conservative fight since I have known him. He is unafraid to stand up to the establishment. He is someone who will defend our freedoms.”
Paul, son of former Texas Congressman Ron Paul and a well known conservative firebrand, is one of the first national elected officials to weigh in on Texas’ race for Governor. The primary race, which will likely be decided in mid-2022, features incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott and challengers Huffines, Chad Prather, Allen West, Paul Belew, and Kurt Schwab.
