In the race for Randall County Commissioner, Precinct 4, three Republicans are on the primary ballot vying to replace retiring Commissioner Buddy DeFord. Retired Amarillo Police Department captain Tam Boatler, former constituent services director for Mac Thornberry, Melissa Kalka, and pastor and project manager Michael D. Grady are seeking to serve Randall’s newly drawn Precinct 4 for the next four years.
The candidates in this race each present interesting platforms that provide clear contrasts in vision for Randall County. And while two candidates have visions that would benefit the county, we recommend voters single out one candidate as the right man to represent Randall County’s Precinct 4.
In the opinion of our publisher’s committee, retired APD captain Tam Boatler is the right person to represent Randall County’s Precinct 4 over the course of the next four years. Boatler’s background in law enforcement would create an important ally for local first responders on the Randall County Commission. Additionally, his strong fiscally responsible background shows Boatler would not be a proponent of raising taxes and would focus on keeping the county’s belt tight and its spending practices fiscally responsible and accountable to citizens.
At a time when most of the current County Commission is subservient to the County Judge, now is the time for an independent thinker who will stand up, listen to the citizens of their precinct, and act based on what is best for the taxpayers, not what is the most popular choice among the rest of the Commission. And we are convinced Boatler is this person.
We might also mention that Michael D. Grady is a very good candidate who has good ideas for Randall County. Grady’s heart is in the right place on this campaign, as he looks to be a servant of the people rather than just a career ladder climber. At this point, however, we believe Grady’s skillset could benefit county citizens elsewhere, perhaps as a future candidate for Randall County Republican chairman or even as a candidate for City Council.
Both Boatler and Grady are good candidates and would be good choices for Randall County voters. However, we believe Boatler’s resume, fiscally responsible platform, and experience navigating the waters of diverse governing boards, as well as his endorsement from Texas Right to Life, set him apart in this contest.
We recommend Tam Boatler for Randall County Commissioner, Precinct 4 in the March Republican primary election.
Early voting runs February 14-25. Election Day is March 1.
