Texas Railroad Commission candidate Marvin “Sarge” Summers has died following a car wreck outside of Midland.

According to media reports, Summers, 69, died following a car wreck on Hwy. 349 in Midland on Tuesday. Police say Summers rear-ended a semi truck when the truck was attempting to make a right-hand turn. Summers did not slow down and crashed into the back of the semi, authorities say.

Summers was in Midland for an event on Tuesday. The candidate was a resident of Lubbock.

A candidate for Texas Railroad Commissioner, Summers was on the Republican primary ballot facing four opponents, including the incumbent, Wayne Christian. In a statement posted to social media following Summers’ death, Christian called Summers a “great man,” and said while he did not know the candidate well, he respected Summers tremendously.

Summers’ name will remain on the March primary ballot, with early voting scheduled to begin on Monday, February 14.
