Officers Make Two Arrests Following String of Incidents in North Amarillo

Provided

Officers made two arrests following a series of nearby — but unrelated — incidents on Thursday night.

According to Amarillo Police, officers were called on Thursday, April 15, at 9:27 p.m., to the 200 block of North Jefferson Street on a physical assault. While responding to this call, a few minutes later, another call came in from the 600 block of Northwest 3rd Avenue on a hit and run with shots having been fired. A minute after the second call, a third call came in from the 700 block of Northwest 4th Avenue on a possible assault and vandalism of a vehicle.

Officers were sent to each location, within two blocks of each other, and found all three calls to have been separate incidents.

The first call, from the 200 block of North Jefferson, was a domestic assault at a residence. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. The suspect was identified and a report was made.

On the second call from the 600 block of Northwest 3rd Avenue, officers found another domestic violence incident. Officers were told that the male suspect intentionally struck the victim’s vehicle with his own vehicle. While leaving the scene, the suspect began firing shots at the victim, striking her vehicle. The suspect was identified, but was not located.

Officers also found the incident in the 700 block of Northwest 4th Avenue to have been a domestic argument, which included a vandalism to a vehicle. All parties were still on scene when officers arrived. Officers investigated the incident and a report was made on the domestic argument. Darren Jones was arrested for criminal mischief for causing damage to another party’s vehicle, and was booked into the Potter County Detention Center.

While out on these incidents, at 9:45pm, officers heard multiple shots being fired within a very close vicinity. Officers could see multiple people in the area ducking and running. Officers moved toward the gunshots in the 200 block of North Jefferson Street and could see the muzzle flash of a gun in the darkness.

As officers approached the gunshots on foot, they could see a male suspect armed with a semiautomatic rifle in front of a residence. The male continued to shoot as officers approached, but stopped as they identified themselves. The suspect then lowered the rifle and walked around the side of the residence to discard the weapon.

Officers safely took the man into custody and identified him as Tommy Johnson, 36. While taking the man into custody, officers collected over 40 spent shell casings from the scene.

Johnson was arrested for aggravated assault on a public servant, tampering with evidence, and discharging a firearm in a municipality, and was booked into the Potter County Detention Center.
