U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Lubbock) is mulling a bid to become the next Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
Arrington, a Plainview native and Texas Tech University graduate, announced on Twitter on Friday night that he is considering launching a bid to become House Speaker. The Lubbock politician said he is weighing launching a bid after being encouraged by his fellow House members.
“With the budget and border as top priorities for our GOP conference and the country, some of my colleagues have encouraged me to run for Speaker,” Arrington wrote. “I’m honored and seriously considering it.”
Arrington, who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2017, currently chairs the House Committee on the Budget and also serves on the Committee on Ways and Means. If elected, Arrington would become the first West Texan to ever be elected as House Speaker. Arrington would also be the first Republican from Texas to serve as House Speaker.
Aside from Arrington, Reps. Jack Bergman (Michigan), Byron Donalds (Florida), Tom Emmer (Minnesota), Kevin Hern (Oklahoma), Austin Scott (Georgia), and Pete Sessions (Texas) are also running.
