The City of Amarillo is set to host a public cleanup of McDonald Lake on Saturday morning from 9:00 am to noon.
The cleanup event follows recent disastrous floods which have affected much of the area. The city noted in a press release that “as floodwaters recede, trash and debris are accumulating in local playas and lakes, including McDonald Lake.” The press release notes that “City of Amarillo staff will be participating, in addition to Keep Amarillo Clean and many other groups/organizations.” There may also be a quorum of Amarillo City Council present, according to a notice published by the city, though the council “will not deliberate or take any formal action on any items discussed.”
Those interested in joining may sign up at www.amarilloparks.org/programs-events/park-clean-up. Bags, gloves, and refreshments will be provided. The press release also encourages volunteers to “dress appropriately for wet and muddy conditions.” The city also encouraged volunteers to “bring plenty of water and sunscreen” on social media.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Southwest Library Parking Lot. The Southwest Library will also be a polling place for the city runoff election, which will be held the same day. The city had planned to host a cleanup of Medi Park on June 17th, though trash had already been removed before the event could take place.
