Herring Hotel Development Company LLC, which owns the historic Herring Hotel in downtown Amarillo, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on March 5th, court documents reveal. Days later, the historic building was the subject of an item by the Center City Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #1 Board.

The bankruptcy filing followed indications of financial trouble, other records have revealed.

The company was originally filed with the Texas Secretary of State’s office on October 25th, 2019. Nearly two years later, the Sugar Land-based company bought the Herring Hotel on October 20th, 2021, under two warranty deeds both set to mature in 2023.

On October 11th, 2023, a notice of foreclosure sale was published by Potter County. However, it appears the sale did not take place. A modification of the loan was completed on October 20th, 2023, and recorded on January 8th, 2024.

On February 9th, another notice of foreclosure sale was published by Potter County, with that sale having been set for March 5th, the same day the company would file for bankruptcy. Potter County could neither confirm nor deny the sale took place.

On March 14th, the Center City TIRZ #1 Board held a meeting with a “presentation of Hotel Market Study proposal for Herring Hotel property” listed on the agenda. No action was taken on that item.
