Kinky Friedman, the humorist and former candidate for governor, has died at age 79.
According to news reports, Friedman died on Thursday at his home in Medina, just west of San Antonio.
A well-known comedic talent, musician, and author, Friedman was a staple of the Texas cultural scene. He released several albums and went on to author several books, including in the mystery and non-fiction genres.
In 2006, he launched an unsuccessful campaign for governor as an independent, challenging then-Gov. Rick Perry. Despite polling showing Friedman in second place at one point in the race, he finished fourth in the contest behind Perry and two other challengers. Friedman’s overall vote share of 13 percent still placed him ahead of two other challengers in the race. His campaign for governor later inspired his 2007 book, You Can Lead a Politician to Water, But You Can’t Make Him Think.
